While the band may cringe at the use of comparisons, references have already been made to (early) Swans, Khanate, Bauhaus, Harvey Milk, Joy Division, The Goslings, My Bloody Valentine, Flipper, Saccharine Trust, Einsturzende Neubauten, etc. On top of that, most of their compositions are purportedly love songs

" ...The Louisville rock trio boasts a taut chemistry and ravishing rawnwss that confirm what a great band is supposed to sound like. Much of the threesome’s communicative vibe can be attributed to the husband-wife team of bassist Tim Harris and vocalist/guitarist Tara Key. But the interplay is also due to fluid songwriting and Key’s inimitable guitar skills. No "Best Guitarists" list is complete without her name." The Absolute Sound - Bob Gendron

Avagami
Avagami was formed in Chicago in 2005 by Matt Espy (drums, electronics, see: Atombombpocketknife, The Reputation) and Eric Lebofsky (vocals, saxophone, electronics, see: unusual drawings) when the two met through Craigslist. Both were looking to push the pop envelope, and incorporate improvisational techniques into a song structure. Their music incorporates elements of Prog, New Wave, Noise, and Krautrock, as well as Burlesque, Lounge, and Psychotherapy (Gestalt.)

"Brighton, MA is a band from Chicago, IL with a sound that could have come from Athens, GA. Named after frontman Matthew Kerstein’s hometown, Brighton, MA (and) falling somewhere between a drunken Bob Dylan and The Flaming Lips, the band cultivates a crossbreed of psychdelia and folk music that is utterly dynamic." -David Feltman, Scope Magazine

Darling
Darling was formed in the fall of 2003 out of angst of living at our parents place and spending the same $10 a night on Old Style at the same crappy bar. Darling has persisted in Chicago these past 4 years, in and out of the hibernation of wintertime, and has played with the likes of Make Believe, The Robot Ate Me, Red Crayola, and Norfolk and Western. Darling was recently review in Bootleg magazine and here is a brief excerpt, "Ground is Sound is beautifully frantic, a drawn out eruption of restrained emotion, like a long dream laced with tension."

Daylight Robbery
"You don't have to be a music critic to hear a little John and Exene in this south-side three-piece's male-female vocal interplay, but Daylight Robbery doesn't stop with X—their recent four-song seven-inch for Residue Records combines the short sharp bursts of late-70s west-coast bands like the Bags and the Wipers with the present-day energy of sweat-soaked Pilsen house shows. If they keep up the smash-and-grab songwriting of tunes like "Washtenaw" and "Cut the Line" they could be one of the stronger bands to emerge from the Chicago punk scene in recent years." -Brian Costello, Chicago Reader

Donald of The Virgins
"Your window to brag that you knew the Virgins when is about to close. Until last year, they had no label, no shows and no record, so knowledge about this cool New York band was strictly by hipster word of mouth. Donald Cumming and Wade Oates met while modeling on a Ryan McGinley shoot in Mexico and decided to start a band to play the songs that Cumming had been recording in his East Village bedroom. They had barely recruited Nick Zarin-Ackerman and Erik Ratensperger and sent out demos before they were opening for Patti Smith and Sonic Youth and touring with Jet. It didn't hurt that the model Jessica Stam was seen wearing their T-shirt backstage at the Lanvin show. As for the actual music (expect a major-label album in the new year), think the Strokes you can dance to." - New York Times

Steve Hauschildt of Emeralds, and Joe Raglani of himself got a heartbreaking amount of gear stolen at this year's No Fun Fest. Two Chicago-area heavy synth meditation jam units, and leaders of Catholic Tapes and Young Tapes, come together to record a benefit cassette to help the above put things back together. Heavy arpeggiation territory ahead.

Free Improv Series: Jayve Montgomery
Reconciling the past with the future, JayVe Montgomery’s work is time traveling to the pre(-)sent, the gift of now. His work reveals his adherence to improvisation and chance as a way to explore evolutionary learning and unintended subjective meaning through random being. Curated by Brian Sulpizio

Golden Birthday
"A typical Golden Birthday song, at least on the album, combines a metronomically repeated, often somewhat fussy percussion loop—galloping low toms, flickering drum machine—with heavily treated guitar and organlike synth tones that weave around the chord progression more than they follow it, implying the melody with negative space rather than stating it outright. Sullivan’s vocals, which he tends to submerge in reverb, are more confident and competent than you’d expect from looking at him—with his close-cropped, lopsided haircut and awkward, gutter-fashionable thrift-store outfits, he could pass for part of the art-damaged indie-pop scene that values yelpy enthusiasm over actual talent. But his singing is more Donovan than Dan Deacon." - Miles Raymer, Chicago Reader

Jeremy Jay
The Jarvis Cockers, Serge Gainsbourgs and Jonathan Richmans of the world appear to be a dying breed in our digital age. Even though we're constantly showered with new artistes, these larger than life figures and their observational eyes, erudite lyricism, and an ability to look like they live their songs have been sadly thin on the ground. Jeremy Jay...generally succeeds by injecting some Modern Lovers pub rock and sedate, new wave synths into his tales of hipper than hip youth and romantic encounters enjoyed beneath the glare of a disco ball. The result is a stripped back, lo-fi sound that attempts to thrust images from the modern world into the context of a vintage Godard film. -Charles Ubaghs, The Quietus (recorderd May 3 for broadcast May 8)

Locrian
“Last night I went to see some music downtown at Nihilist, an artspace converted from an industrial building into a home-built loft inhabited by any number of amps, records, and weirdos. The second of four acts was a local duo called Locrian, who built a huge pillar of feedback, right on top of my head. One guy started picking an acoustic-electric guitar while the other shouted into a echoed out mic, both of them way too close to their amps, guitar feeding back, mic feeding back, keyboards pounding and probably also feeding back somehow. They each had a big mess of pedals to get a big swirling, pummeling sound, real nice low end from the keys, sometimes the hint of a melody or progression lurking under the squeal, and when the guitarist plugged in the electric, things got nuts. It ended with both sweaty and prostrate before their cabinets, and they were really cool and appreciative and gave me a cool cd-r! Anyway, if you are in Chicago and like loud noise, Locrian is awesome.” - from brokenpants.com |||||||| The above songs are sections of a live peformance in Chicago, recorded by sound engineer Tanadej (DJ) Siriwattaprayoon.

Red Denizen
Happy May Day! Pure Hype salutes the workers of the world by hosting Red Denizen in our record library. Born on the 4th of July 2006, Red Denizen is Laurence Ludwig, Adam Kroos, and Chris Ott. Coming from Chicago bands M.O.T.O. and Paper Bullets, Red Denizen is heavily influenced by their old bands. Mixture of Punk, Rock n' Roll, little bit of blues, and off key song writings. Most Red Denizen songs are 2 minutes long, and all of them were written not sober.

Reds and Blues
Painting a picture of Reds and Blue, the band dances between cacophony and calm, chanting around progesque keys, heavy drums, and drony bass. The band was formed by Ellen (of ZZZZ) in the spring of 2006. Fuzzy on reality, the noir sound moves from the cabaret, to the open road, to the far ends of the imagination. Ju Ju Pow Wow!

Rock Falls
Annie was born and raised in rock falls, which is the moniker she has adopted for her music. here are some other things about her: 1. she sings and plays the guitar and the ukelele. 2. her songs are sweet, concise, intimate, occasionally sad, and always sincere and lovingly presented. 3. all of her songs are written on her living room floor, which is where she also sits when recording them on her tascam 4-track tape recorder (the porta03. it's the black model before they switched to blue). 4. speaking of blue, that is annie's favorite color. 5. she is mind-blowingly great at parallel-parking. 6. she really hopes that you like her music.

Soft Targets form in summer 2004 after the breakup of Reagan National Crash Diet with Chris Auman, guitar/vocals and Carol Bales, bass (Reagan National Crash Diet, Coupleskate). Soft Targets is a power duo. Winter 2004 Perry Finch (Vambo Marble Eye, The Finches) joins on drums. Soft Targets is a power trio. Carol departs. Soft Targets is a power duo. Tina Finch (Smitten, The Finches) joins on bass. Soft Targets is a power trio. Reg Shrader (Seam, Circus Lupus, The Paperbacks) joins on guitar. Soft Targets is a power quartet. Tina gets pregnant and departs. Tim Davison (Fairmount Girls, The Clerics) joins on bass. Soft Targets remain a power quartet. Perry leaves on drums. Dave Potter (Lustre Kings) joins on drums. And then, and then, AND THEN Tim Davison leaves. Dan Kiss joins on bass. Soft Targets remain a power quartet.

"Dreary songs. Foggy Americana pierced by the occasional freight horn, sung by a man who seemed to be channeling England and Ireland, drinking in a frothy ale and wolfing down bangers, elbowing up with hard working old men, their eyes as clouded as the windows of a gilded age saloon." -Dan Duffy

The Goodnight Loving
(Rebroadcast)
The Andy's were born in the same hospital where their parents met. They learned to crawl, walk, and even talk together. Shared their first kiss together in fact. Austin and Zach actually met one another through MySpace after they had been simultaneously searching both Milwaukee area swingers, and Neil Young. Eventually, the four boys met through Colin, who had been working on assembling a pop-group for an upcoming ABC pilot. The stars aligned that day friends, and the results are in the ratings. Look for

The Names That Spell
the names that spell use drums, more drums, guitars, bass, keyboards, accordian, trumpet, saxophone, ukulele, zither, computer noisies, voices& many other devices to create our * ., . . we are committed to being unpredictable, and the music we play we play for ourselves,so obviously we are big businessmen. we operate a big business. every day we have to deal with shareholders, crockholders, moneyminglers, and paperpushers.,. and every day we make one hundred scillion transactions through our state-of-the-art mobile transmitter/receiver device machine. even though this is very hectic for us [and has even caused some of us to overfeed the parakeet], we still perform live constantly. and we don't outsource our number crunching to incompetent Bot-Drones. we painstakingly handcraft all of our numbers to look exactly the same, so at the end of the day we can invent our own taxes.

These Wonderful Evils
"Taking their name from The Shakers’ 1967 Swedish psych classic, These Wonderful Evils are largely the product of guitarist Zak Boerger and draw equally on the traditions of garage psych and proto-punk and slightly more erudite folk and minimalist approaches to sound-as-song, prizing intuition above all else as an organizing tool. Their debut album, ‘Regine Flory’ is a sideways attempt at that hoary chestnut “the anti-war record,” and in a 2008 review, The Wire magazine said, “there’s a lonesome edge to the music that would situate it outside of any particular historical tradition and closer to the mystery school of regional private press obscurities. The acoustic tracks skirt the fringes of American primitive without particularly sounding like anyone else, but it’s the elegiac fuzz settings that really make the album stand out." - Issueprojectroom.org

Thomas Function & White Mystery: Summer Breeze Preview
Two fine Summer Breeze '09 acts preview the next days festivities! A brief word about T-Funk: "Thomas Function's bright, charismatic melodies are carried through a straight up beating, thumping, chiming rock n roll delivery. Signature bright keys and round classic rock bass drum set the top and bottom plateaus for the insanity. Classic, but somehow it comes off in a shiny new package. Like a tack piano on steroids. All because of the smart production and great song-writing going on in this band. And who can deny the patented melody-belt of Josh's vocal stylings? These are the type of musicians the record execs woulda trekked down to the swamp to sign a few decades ago...askin directions toward "that rock n roll genius sound". It just reeks of authentic, classic instant smash-hit wonder syndrome. And it keeps on pouring out of their pens in direct proportion to the booze pouring down their lovely pop-singin throats." - Tic Tac Totally! Records ...HEY! Thomas Function headline WHPK's Summer Breeze on Saturday, May 16th....and White Mystery will be playing too!
